There has been an error creating the personal site-SharePoint 2010

When an end user tries to create an individual site collection on their personal My Site page by clicking the My Content link for the first time, he or she might encounter this error message.

Resolution Steps:
To resolve this error, in Central Administration, do the following:
1.       Click Application Management.
2.       In the Service Applications section, click Manage service applications.
3.       On the Manage Service Applications page, click the User Profile service application that is associated with the Web application that hosts My Sites, and then, in the Operations section of the ribbon, click Manage.
4.       On the Manage Profile Service page, in the My Site Settings section, click Setup My Sites.
5.       On the Manage Profile Service page, in the Personal Site Location section, verify that the value in the Location box is a wildcard inclusion managed path defined on the Web application that hosts My Sites. If not, create a new wildcard inclusion managed path for the Web application, and then use it as the value in the Location box.

In case of any further queries/questions then please let me know. I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issuesJ.

  2. Hi there,

    Thank you for the information.
I have a problem at step 3. When I select the User Profile Service Application and select Manage I get the following error "an unexpected error has occurred."

Do you know why I got this error and how to solve this?

    Thank you,
    Kind Regards,
    Marli

  3. Please go to your log file and check the error ..You will find more information about the error associated with the Correlation Id you mentioned above

you need to look up the correlation id in the ULS log and post the details back here in order for us to help figure out what is going on

This error usually occurs when, under Manage Services on server, the two services for User Profiles aren't started.

Go to Central Admin --> System Settings --> Manage services on server. Check if User Profile Services and User Profile Synchronization Services are started.

    another reason:
It also occurs if you have provisioned a user profile service and you have not 'restarted' the server

    1. Hi Amol,

The log file that I went into didn't have any Correlation Id's in - I searched for it in the file. Where are the log files that you are talking about?

My User Profiles services are started.
I also did a iisreset on all the servers.

      Thank you,
      Marli

    2. The logs location that i was talking about is C:\program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\Logs

I hope that you had already checked the status of User Profile Synchronization service.

Could you please restart the servers and check the results agai? Thank you.

  4. Hi Amol,

Thank you, I found the logs. I don't know exactly what went wrong and at first I couldn't delete the User Profile Service Application. But eventually I could, recreated a User Profile Service Application and the problem was fixed!!

    Thank you,
    Marli

  5. Hi Amol,

I also had the problem/error "There has been an error creating the personal site."

My solution was (after alot of reading and trying alot of different things) to create the My Site site collection on the root of the web application "SharePoint - 80". I didn't know that there should be site collection at the root but this fixed my problem.

Note: I'm only publishing as anonymous as I don't have the other options (usernames, etc.)

    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Marli
